Naturalization records for Sibley County are available on microfilm. Many of the
early naturalization records do not list much information, just the applicant's
name and previous citizenship. Some of them list when he came to the
United States (before 1920, women did not apply separately for
citizenship. They became citizens when their husbands or fathers
did.) The 1918 Alien Registration Records, for adults who were not full
citizens in 1918, are also on microfilm, SAM 169. These list quite a bit
of information on the individual and his family.
On microfilm. Indexed by township. Gives section number of
property, and may contain information about spouses and when the property was
acquired.
Church and Community History Books
The library has many commemorative books, published for the 50th, 100th, or
125th anniversary of churches in Sibley County. Many of these list past
members, and some list Confirmations, Deaths, etc. in the congregation for
every year. Not a substitute for the actual church records, but an easy
way to find out which church is likely to have the records. Look in the
catalog under Sibley County, Church Records.
Books have been published on the early history of Henderson, Gaylord, and
Winthrop. Also there is a book on the Henderson - Fort Ridgely Road that
goes into quite a bit of detail about the places along the way, including
Mountville and New Rome.
The History of the Minnesota Valley, written in 1882, has a whole
chapter devoted to Sibley county and its early prominent settlers. If
you are lucky, there will be a little paragraph on your ancestor. Other
names appear in the lists of early township officers, but generally are not
indexed. In the Reading Room.
The library has over 15,000 printed and manuscript family histories, many not
otherwise available. Look in the manuscript card catalog and on-line under
the family surname.
The Reference Room has many Minnesota City Directories and phone
directories. More are available on microfilm. Ask at the Reference
Desk.
Several books in the Reference Room list all Minnesota servicemen in the
Civil and Spanish-American Wars.
