Things you can look up at a library near you:
You may be able to borrow these from the Minnesota Historical Society through
inter-library loan at your local library. Or you can get them at the LDS
Family History Centers.
The LDS Family History Centers have many church records on microfilm.
Catholic records may be available through the archdiocese in Saint Paul (this is
unverified.)
Many libraries have books like Germans to America. Again, the
LDS has many passenger lists on microfilm. For Swedes, the Emigranten
CD is the place to look. The mailing list SWEDEN-L@rootsweb.com
has people on it who own copies of the CD and can do a lookup.

Some of these books are not widely available, but some of them are.
You may be able to find a copy of The History of the Minnesota Valley
by Rev. Neill (published 1882). It's fun reading, and if your ancestors
came early enough, there might be a paragraph written about them
I personally have bought the books on Winthrop, Gaylord, and Henderson, and
found them all to be good resources and interesting reading.
Guides to doing Research
Many books can be gotten through inter-Library loan if they are not at your
local library. If you are doing research in Sweden, you should absolutely
buy or borrow a copy of Cradled in Sweden. (At the moment it's out
of print and is going for high prices on the used-book market.)
Iron Range Research Center
If you live in Northern Minnesota, the research center at Ironworld in
Chisholm has a wealth of materials. The website is http://www.ironworld.com/ancestry
They also can do some research for a fee.
